Tilt EQ

One knob that pivots the whole spectrum around a fixed centre.

Tilt EQ

A tilt EQ does one thing: it lifts one end of the spectrum while lowering the other, pivoting around a centre frequency you set once and forget. It is the fastest way to make a source darker or brighter without deciding which band to touch.

Why one knob

Shelving filters ask two questions before you hear anything: which frequency, and how much. A tilt asks one. When you already know a bus is too bright and you just want less of that, the second question is noise. Set the pivot at 650 Hz, turn the knob left, move on.

The filter is a matched pair of first-order shelves sharing an inverse gain, so the response through the pivot stays flat as you sweep. No phase surprise at unity, no level jump when you bypass.

Installing

Drop the .jsfx file in REAPER/Effects/Realstore/ and it appears under JS: Realstore/Tilt EQ in the FX browser. Or install through ReaPack and it updates itself.

Controls

  • Tilt — negative darkens, positive brightens, unity at centre
  • Pivot — the frequency that stays put, 100 Hz to 4 kHz
  • Trim — output gain, for matching level before and after
